Geralyn Lucas's book premiere "Why I Wore Lipstick To My Mastectomy" hosted by Lifetime Networks and Redbook Magazine on October 11th at Hearst Tower in New York City, New York. Lucas was 27, happily working as a 20/20 producer, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Suddenly, her world became a blur of appointments with surgeons and emotional breakdowns. Her book's catchy title belies its substantial content: this is an honest, perceptive memoir from a feisty survivor who's willing to discuss every detail, like getting sick in cabs during chemo treatments, baldness and sex.
In fact, the book opens with Lucas, who's now 36, recounting her visit to a New York topless bar as she agonizes over losing a breast and contemplates reconstructive surgery. Lucas doesn't dismiss her fears; she talks about wanting to have a child and how her husband withdraws when so many other people step in to provide her with emotional support. What makes her memoir so moving is the author's breezy style and her focus on the daily details of her illness ("I am in the shower, and when I start lathering my comb-over, most of it stays in my hands. The big patches of hair just come out. No warning"). The story of Lucas's recovery, and of the birth of her daughter, make her book surprisingly optimistic and immensely empowering.
This sounds like a great book to read, and to encourages other to read this book, especially for someone who's going through like Geralyn's.

"Law and Order: SVU"'s Mariska Hargitay played host at an exclusive Hollywood "Suave Hot Moms Soiree" benefiting the Step Up Women's Network. The VIP event, held at a private estate in Beverly Hills, was thrown by Suave and the Hot Moms Club to help remind moms to put beauty back on their to-do lists.
New Mom and Emmy-winning actress Mariska Hargitay was joined by other celebrity moms as they sipped mom-tinis and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of beauty and socializing in the Hollywood Hills. Guests were treated to a "Hot Mom Hairstyles" runway show with styles created by Suave's celebrity hair guru Harry Josh and were then invited to re-create the looks by visiting Harry and his team of stylists at the Suave Hair Style cabana. "Hot Mom Manicures" were available, plus a silent auction benefiting Step Up Women's Network, a national, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to strengthening community resources for women and girls.
"I loved hosting the Suave Hot Moms Soiree! It's always great to get together with other moms who share the same experience," says Mariska Hargitay. "As moms, we always put our child's needs first. But, I've also realized that it's very important to take care of myself too. So, I think it's great that Suave and Hot Moms Club are reminding moms to put themselves on the to-do list."
