The daughter of Chicago Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee has a rare genetic disease that causes blindness in young children, and he said Friday he has started a foundation with the owner of the Boston Celtics to find a cure.
Jada, who is 3 years old and Lee's only child, has lost vision in one eye. Lee, the 2005 NL batting champion, has spent the last two weeks researching Leber's Congenital Amaurosis. He has teamed with Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck, whose son is one of only about 3,000 people in the United States with the disease. Lee said the goal of his foundation, called "Project 3000," is to have everyone with the disease tested because that will aid research. So far, he said, only about 500 of those diagnosed have undergone genetic testing.
Lee has not played since announcing Sept. 17 his daughter was ill.
"You know it's something that is devastating initially when you are told your daughter, there is something wrong with your child. It's hard to explain unless you have children. You will do anything to protect your children," he said. Source Source
L.A. Lakers Lamar Odom carrying a bible and without his usual smile, spoke somberly Thursday regarding the sudden death of his 6 1/2 -month-old son three months ago, saying he needed to be strong for his other children.
"I feel a little lost at times. God is keeping me strong," Odom told reporters Thursday at the Los Angeles Lakers' training camp in his first public comments since Jayden Odom suffocated in his crib and died June 28. After his son died, the versatile 6-foot-10 forward withdrew from the U.S. National Team that won a bronze medal in the world championships this summer. He also was a member of the U.S. Olympic team that won a bronze two years ago.
"Sometimes, I need to be by myself, whether it's a week or two weeks," he said. "My family has been understanding. There was a time when I thought basketball wasn't going to be able to heal the wound."

Lance Armstrong says his three children don't waste their time playing video games: He makes sure they get out and get physical.
"It's all about lifestyle," the seven-time Tour de France champion said this week at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. "It's what you do when you wake up to when you go to bed."
Armstrong, who has retired from cycling, has a son and twin daughters, all under the age of 10. The 35-year-old cancer survivor is now training for his first New York City Marathon. Source
